The British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT) is a remote archipelago located in the central Indian Ocean, consisting of more than 50 small islands and atolls. The territory is uninhabited by civilians, with its main island, Diego Garcia, hosting a strategic military base operated by the United Kingdom and the United States.
